How many pets are too many pets?

Responsible pet owners always weigh the pros and cons before deciding to get another animal. The right approach here is to make sure that you’ll be able to provide all the necessary care. And what about responsible animal shelters?

Of course, they, too, have their limitations. But they usually try to help as many animals as possible. And they do their utmost best to feed, treat illnesses, and find families for the strays.

Sirius animal shelter is the biggest animal shelter in the country. They provide a home to around 3000 dogs and 300 cats. The animals need literally a ton of food per day, so the shelter has to rely on a community of friends and donors. And we are happy to be among them.

We at MacPaw are very fond of animals, and our colleagues share this love. 
Our wonderful macpawians are always ready to help our furry friends, so for 
us visiting the Sirius shelter has become a tradition. We usually come there for a day to volunteer, feed and walk the animals, and help the shelter employees with clean-up and maintenance work. These visits are heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. But we know that they are important. Both the animals and the territory need a lot of attention, so every pair of helping hands is always welcome here. We also bring food, blankets, and other necessities every time we come.

Handling this many animals is far from easy, but the hardest times for Sirius were during the russian occupation. The Shelter is situated in the Dymer village about 40 km (25 miles) north of Kyiv. That area was occupied soon after the beginning of the full-scale invasion. They had no contact or help from the ‘mainland’ for 35 days. So as soon as the territory was freed from the invaders, we planned our visit. We loaded a bus full of food and supplies and went to the shelter together with the Come Back Alive foundation.

It’s a miracle and a great achievement that the shelter employees and almost all the animals survived the occupation. This shows how dedicated the staff are to their charges. We wish for them to always get all the help they need, 
and for the animals – to find their forever homes! And we’ll continue to support them in the meantime.
