Accessible taxis for wheelchair users

In April 2023, one of Ukraine’s taxi services introduced a new option – accessible taxis for wheelchair users. We are happy to have supported the launch of this project by sponsoring the purchase of two specialized cars.

Mobility often defines the quality of life. Ukraine has been doing a lot in terms of accessibility lately. However, many locations and services still are out of reach for people with disabilities. This service aims to change the situation and offer more freedom to wheelchair users.

Uklon

The service is provided by the Uklon company. They offer two specialized cars designed to accommodate wheelchair users. The cars are equipped with a hydraulic lift, a ramp, as well as safety belts and fasteners for wheelchairs.

For the service to be flawless, the drivers took a training course in communication and interaction with people with locomotor disabilities by Dostupno.UA, an NGO working on normalizing disabilities and promoting accessibility in the country. The course took place at the MacPaw Space, which itself is wheelchair accessible. Dostupno.UA is our long-time partner, and we share their commitment to equal opportunities for all.

The fares for the accessible taxi will be 30% lower than regular prices. The proceeds will cover operational costs: drivers’ wages, fuel, etc.

Service is available in Kyiv and its suburbs

For now, the accessible taxi service is operating in beta mode. It is available in Kyiv and its suburbs, but they plan to expand to other regions.

In these difficult times, working on acceptance and accessibility is extremely important. It is no longer about just providing the missing infrastructure. It is about treating those injured during shelling or wounded on the battlefield with dignity. We hope to see many more projects in this are soon. And we are ready to lend a hand.
