Wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone

Many Kyivans remember the April of 2020 by the wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (as if Covid-19 was not enough!). The flames were spreading rapidly, and the smoke quickly reached the capital. Local firefighters headed to put out the fires, but they were not equipped properly.

The firefighters did not even have drinking water, let alone respirators which were nearly impossible to find because of the pandemic. There was no time to waste, so we decided to step in.

This was truly a team effort. Many macpawians rallied together to search for the necessary goods and drive them to the Dytiatky checkpoint – the entrance to the Exclusion Zone. In the three trips we made, we delivered a number of useful items:

$1100 worth of water, wet wipes, American army rations, apples, snacks, and other foods;
‍

$1400 worth of FFP3 face masks and $740 worth of industrial respiratory protection gear;
‍

backpack fire pumps for wildland firefighting.
‍

“Prevent! Save! Help!” – that’s the motto of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service. While they were protecting us from this disaster, we were glad to provide some support in return and make this job they had to do in the hostile Exclusion Zone environment a bit easier.
